Building work to finally start on Lydiate’s new £800,000 community centre.

WORK is to begin on a new £800,000 community centre is Lydiate – 13 years after the old one burned down.

The much-needed, part Lottery funded, village building, on Lambshear Lane, will be available to people of all ages and community groups.

The last community building was a wooden youth club which was set on fire by arsonists in 1996.

Chairman of Lydiate Parish Council David Russell believes it will play an integral part in community life.

He said: “This has been our dream of building a new purpose built village centre which everyone can use.

"We have been trying to get a new centre built since the old youth club was burnt down.

"This will be for everyone.

“Youth groups, disabled groups and University of the Third Age are amongst those interested in using it. Youth groups will be able to meet there and use it as a coffee bar if they wish.”
