AROUND 150 local residents are opposing the new Lydiate Marina.

A petition containing their signatures was handed in to the parish council when it met to discuss the project.

Residents raised concerned about traffic, house insurance, loss of green belt and security.

Maureen Roche of Bells Close said: “Around 100 of us also attended the meeting and we were all against it.

“The marina will be built on green belt land which is always under cultivation.

“Residents are also worried insurers will not insure them because of the affect the development will have on the canal banks.

“Also, how is the marina going to be secured? Barges will not be used in winter so it will be prone to vandalism.”

Residents also questioned claims that the marina would bring in £1m in tourism.

Mrs Roche added: “People on barges usually bring their own food with them.

“The pubs already bring a series of problems to us and so it will get even worse at night.

“Traffic is our biggest problem especially for emergency services.
