New unit at Woodlands Hospice finally opens its doors

A NEW unit to provide overnight facilities for patients is opening at a Merseyside hospice this weekend.

The 15-bed unit at Woodlands Hospice, which lies within the grounds of University hospitalAintree, has taken two years to build but has been planned since the charity was founded.

Currently, when patients at the day hospice need bed care, they have to be transferred back to the specialist, palliative care ward within the main Aintree Hospital.

The in-patient unit will mean “seamless” care will now be provided.

Tilly Reid, clinical manager at the hospice said: “We are thrilled the unit is finally opening, after everyone’s hard work.

“It has been a dream for many years.

“We will be able to support families is a more rounded way now.

“It is very important to us to see the whole picture and help family members as well as the patient because they are suffering in a different way.”
