Work starts Aintree community centre

Sefton Council

WORK began on a new £170,000 community centre in Aintree Village on Monday.

The first steps have now been taken in a four-phase project which aims to transform the old Holy Rosary infants’ school building, on Aintree Lane, into a centre than can be used by the whole community, day and night.

The infants’ school has been lying vacant since pupils were moved to Oriel Drive, and over the coming weeks and months the interior will be completely remodelled.

The walls of the four former classrooms will be demolished to create larger spaces for events and meetings, new windows will be installed and the plumbing and electrical systems will be brought up to modern standards.

The building will also be made more energy efficient, with new roofing insulation installed, while the exterior space will be landscaped and parking areas improved.

Funding has come from Sefton Council and The Veolia Environmental Trust, an organisation that awarded a £101,600 grant through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Other important contributions were generated through cake-baking events and a sponsored tunnel walk, as well as gifts and pledges from the congregation at Old Roan Baptist Church.
